Н а 15 април тази година емблематичната за Париж катедрала "Нотр Дам" бе обхваната от най-големия пожар, който историята й помни.
Огнената стихия продължи около 15 часа, а светът гледаше с ужас. Кулата на катедралата се срути, носещата конструкция беше обгърната от пламъци.
Голяма част от покрива също беше разрушен, като само една-трета от него се запази.
В последващите дни френският президент Еманюел Макрон увери обществото, че катедралата може да бъде възстановена и бързо стартира инициатива за набиране на средства за подпомагане на възстановяването, като не е ясно колко години ще отнеме.
От 22 април 2019 г. досега събраните средства са над 1 милиард евро.
На 17 април Франция съобщи, че организира международен конкурс за архитекти за възстановяване на кулата на катедралата. Френският министър-председател Едуард Филип заяви, че "правителството търси нов облик, адаптиран към техниките и предизвикателствата на нашата епоха“.
Това подтикна редица архитекти и дизайнери да развихрят творческия си нюх. От съвременни стъклени кули до готически стъклописи, кандидатите досега предлагат ново преосмисляне на класическото.

Paris a connu lundi dernier un des épisodes les plus bouleversants de son histoire patrimoniale. C’est sous les yeux impuissants de millions de Français que s’est consumé le toit de la cathédrale Notre-Dame, plongeant la capitale toute entière dans un nuage de fumée et de tristesse. Des vestiges de la charpente du XII ème siècle, il ne reste plus que des cendres. La flèche de 53 mètres de haut imaginée par Viollet-le-Duc au milieu du XIX ème siècle s’est elle aussi effondrée, connaissant ainsi le même sort de celle qui couronnait l’édifice jusqu’en 1792. Il est terrifiant de réaliser que même les plus grands chefs-d’oeuvres ne sont pas impérissables. Comment un ouvrage qui aura nécessité des centaines d’années de travaux peut-il s’envoler dans le ciel de Paris en quelques heures ? Outre les questions légitimes de protection et de systèmes de prévention que l’on est en droit de se poser, il nous appartient aujourd’hui de savoir comment faire revivre ce bijou architectural qui fait toute l’identité de la ville la plus visitée au Monde. En tant qu’architectes, nous sommes évidemment sensibles au projet de sa reconstruction mais une question se pose : faut-il la refaire à l’identique ? Ce sujet est très sensible pour des raisons que l’on comprend aisément. La forêt de bois qui constituait la charpente, ses assemblages et son âge en faisaient un ouvrage remarquable à tous les égards. On imagine mal qu’il existerait une autre option que celle consistant à reconstruire la charpente et la toiture à l’identique en nous appuyant sur tous les documents que nous possédons. A l’image du château de Guédelon que l’on construit à la force des bras et de l’amour du savoir-faire ancestral, Notre-Dame de Paris pourrait devenir un gigantesque chantier pédagogique à ciel ouvert. D’ici quelques décennies, cet épisodes tragique s’effacerait au profit d’une toiture flambant neuve, si vous nous passez l’expression. Mais à bien y réfléchir, serions-nous vraiment satisfaits de cette tentative de pied-de-nez au destin ? Quel autre plaisir y trouverions-nous à part celui de nous conforter dans la certitude que tout est éternel ?
